On September 20th, CSiW research assistant Aibakyt Baekova had a chance to present her research poster as a part of her Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) experience. During her summer work with the CSiW project, Aiba accomplished a variety of tasks, including the transcription of audio recordings from a two-day group discussion that took place in Uganda in May 2018. This particular task allowed her to learn more about sexual violence and men’s experiences during and after the conflict in Northern Uganda. She also acquired a deeper knowledge of various research methods and research ethics.
Aiba’s poster mainly focuses on masculinity and the experiences of men who were abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). In the course of this research, she learned about the complexities of the topic and the need to challenge the male perpetrator – female victim dichotomy. The CSiW team supported Aiba throughout the poster creation process and provided valuable feedback. She also relied on the works of CSiW partners. Aiba was very grateful for the opportunity to share her research and work experience with the CSiW project and engage with fellow students and faculty members.
